February 2014 was the 50th anniversary of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, the perfect opportunity to combine my love of teenage social media fandoms with a bit of history. After careful research of the One Direction twitter fandom and the Beatles' rise to fame, I created a retrospective transcription of what Beatlemania would have looked like on Twitter. It was a lot of fun to make and I received great feedback from journalists and writers.

Lessons Learned

  • I realized later this could have been a news story. I'll need to catch the news cycle earlier on, next time.
  • I saw an opportunity to create social media art out of a current event (an anniversary), which I plan on doing more of in the future.
  • Rather than come up with all the tweets, handles, etc. myself I was able to recycle content that was already out there. It saved me a lot of time and ended up feeling more authentic.
