Intellectual Climate Committee

As chair of this Duke Student Government committee, I worked with members for over two years to define and research the intellectual climate at Duke. We implemented a student body survey, interviewed student leaders and administrators, and finally wrote a report that defined our strengths and our weaknesses. I took ownership of creating infographics and spreading awareness through a PR campaign. Our website can be found here.

Lessons Learned

  • I knew from the start that the committee was meant to be a research effort only but I still believe having had a long-term plan for turning that research into action would have been helpful. I set the groundwork for continued action as much as I could through conversations with campus leaders, and the report is often used as a reference. Still, a mechanism to ensure sustained attention and work on intellectual climate would have been best.
